Glass bottles and amber glass bottles
Glass bottles have been among the most important packaging materials for food, beverages, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products for centuries. They are made from a mixture of quartz sand, soda, and lime, and are characterized by their chemical resistance, impermeability, and reusability. Glass is taste- and odor-neutral, which preserves the contents in their pure form. In addition, it is almost completely recyclable without any loss of quality – a major advantage in terms of sustainability and circular economy.
One key distinction between glass bottles is their color. Clear glass bottles are particularly suitable for products that should highlight their visual appeal, such as premium spirits, mineral water, or juices. Transparency plays a central role here, as consumers can see the contents. However, clear glass offers no protection against light, especially UV radiation. This can negatively affect sensitive contents such as oils, vitamins, or beer by accelerating chemical reactions and reducing shelf life.
Brown glass bottles, on the other hand, provide effective protection from light thanks to their coloration. They absorb a large portion of UV radiation and are therefore especially suitable for light-sensitive liquids. Typical applications include beer bottles, pharmaceutical products such as drops or tinctures, as well as essential oils. By shielding the contents from light, brown glass helps maintain quality for a longer period, making it highly functional. At the same time, brown glass often conveys a traditional, natural image.
In practice, the choice between clear and brown glass bottles depends on the intended purpose: if the product’s appearance is to be emphasized, clear glass is usually chosen; if durability and protection of ingredients are the priority, brown glass is the better option. Both variants combine the advantages of glass as a safe, eco-friendly, and versatile packaging material.
